Salvaged this from the old blog, good read for all YouTubers.

#1 Pick a channel name with a keyword in it – when creating your account, be sure to pick a name that includes a relevant keyword to the videos you will be posting. This will increase the chances of someone finding your channel through a google search.

#2 Post unique, original, entertaining, and/or valuable content for viewers – as with your blog, you want to post content that is beneficial to your visitors. Quite simply, you have to consistently produce content that people will want to watch. Also, producing original and entertaining content will make it less work for you when promoting your videos.

# 3 Produce related content – find your video “niche” just as if it was your blog.

#4 Friend users – find users commenting on related videos and friend them.

#5 Comment-make comments on related videos and channels to promote your channel name.

#6 Create a unique and visually appealing background - YouTube allows you to customize your background prettily easily. If you are a little more experienced you can get into more complex customization as well.

#7 Post a video response- find a similar video with a lot of views and post your video as a video response.

#8 Make effective use of tags- when you post your videos be sure to include relevant tags and keywords that users will search for frequently.

As you can see, building a successful YouTube channel is very similar to building a successful blog.
